Miami & Havana

April 27th - May 4th , 2019

This eight-day trip offers immersion into the dynamic art scenes of both Miami and Havana, Cuba. Begin in Miami for three nights at the Betsy Hotel on Miami Beach. Highlights include a walking tour of Little Havana, private tours of the Perez Art Museum and of the Museum of Contemporary Art, and a visit to the famed Wynwood Walls. In Havana, the Biennial Art Festival will be in full swing, with innovative art showcased everywhere in the city. We’ll visit well-known and emerging artists in their studios, explore secret pop-up galleries, spend a day in the fishing village of Cojimar seeing Hemingway’s former house and much more.

Daily Itinerary

Saturday, April 27th:

Depart Los Angeles for Miami on a morning flight. Arrive and transfer to The Betsy Hotel on Miami Beach. After Check-in, gather on the rooftop for a cocktail at the Skyline Bar. Dinner and the evening at leisure. (R)

Sunday, April 28th:

Today we begin with a private tour of the Perez Art Museum. Enjoy lunch at Verde Restaurant with views of Biscayne Bay. Afterwards, a private walking tour of Little Havana meanders through the neighborhood to focus on Cuban art. Upon return to The Betsy Hotel we’ve arranged a private tour of the hotel’s art collection and a conversation with a local historian of Cuba for the Miami-perspective on U.S-Cuba relations past and present. Monday, April 29th:

This morning, visit the art district of Wynwood for a private walking tour of the famed Wynwood Walls street murals. Lunch at Three Restaurant promises a unique culinary experience. The afternoon is devoted to the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA). Return to the hotel for a late afternoon of leisure before heading to a special dinner at The Surf Club in north Miami Beach. (B, L, D)

Tuesday, April 30th:

After breakfast at The Betsy Hotel we depart for our morning flight to Havana to participate in the 13th Havana Biennial Art Festival. Upon arrival in Havana our Cuban English-speaking guide leads a cultural orientation to the city. We’ll visit the Revolution Plaza, take a private walking tour of Old Havana, and enjoy lunch at a local Paladar (the first of many distinct dining experiences at a small, family owned and operated eatery). Prior to check-in at the Grand Packard Hotel, we’ll visit one the Biennial’s secret pop-up galleries, installed in Old Havana. Late afternoon check-in to our hotel. Group dinner at Paladar Ivan Justo, within walking distance of our hotel. (B, L, D)

Wednesday, May 1st: 

Our morning will be devoted to fine art museums in Old Havana and features private guided tours of the Museo de Bellas Artes, concentrating on the Cuban fine arts collection, and the Centro de Arte Contemporaneo Wilfredo Lam, housed in the 18th-century Casa de los Condes de Penalver. In addition, we’ll visit a curated selection of Biennial galleries in Old Havana. We’ll stop for lunch in Old Havana. In the afternoon we visit an artist studio, an artisan market, and the Muraleando neighborhood to see Cuban street art. Evening at leisure. Optional evening at renowned jazz club, La Zorra y El Cuervo Night Club. (B, L)

Thursday, May 2nd: 

Today we drive to the Miramar neighborhood for sweeping views of Havana and to continue exploring the Biennial Cultural Corridor of Linea Street and an exclusive visit to Instituto Superior de Arte, the national art school for Cuba’s young artists. Lunch at Paladar Rio Mar, which overlooks the river in Miramar, and includes access to an artist home and studio. In the afternoon, we’ll visit two Biennial features: Pabellon Cuba where artists create installations in response to Cuban architecture, and Behind the Wall, a one kilometer corridor populated with artists and galleries. Dinner at Paladar La Habanera in Miramar. (B, L, D)

Friday, May 3rd: 

Cojimar, the fishing village setting of Ernest Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea, is our destination today. Begin with a visit to the Raul Corrales Gallery of photographs documenting the Cuban revolution. Lunch at a Paladar in the neighborhood. In the afternoon, explore the Biennial feature El Taller Chullima, an exhibition curated by Wilfredo Prieto—merging various mediums, including cuisine. En route back to the hotel, visit the private home and workshop of two artist brothers. Dinner at Havana’s famous Paladar La Guarida. Following dinner, we’ll enjoy our center orchestra seats for a musical program in the newly renovated Alicia Alonso Gran Teatro de Habana. (B, L, D)

Saturday, May 4th: 

Following breakfast, transfer to the Havana airport for your international flight back to Miami. Upon arrival to Miami, connect to your domestic flight to Los Angeles, California. Welcome Home! (B)
