Barcelona & Biblao
August 21st - 28th , 2017
Spend an art-filled week in Barcelona and Bilbao exploring the modern and contemporary cultural splendors in each city. We'll stay in centrally located four-star hotels and enjoy delicious, regional cuisine in celebrated restaurants. Private gallery and artist studio visits will be featured together with guided tours at major museums and other important cultural venues.
Monday, August 21st:
Individual arrivals in Barcelona. Check-in to hotel, and gather for welcome cocktails and dinner.
Tuesday, August 22nd:
Spend the morning touring the Picasso Museum, where an extensive collection of the artist's masterworks is on display in five adjoining medieval palaces. After a group lunch, visit MACBA, Barcelona's Museum of Contemporary Art, and enjoy a privately guided tour. A "gallery hop" concludes the day.
Wednesday, August 23rd:
In the morning, explore modernist architecture along Passeig de Garcia en route to La Sagrada Familia, Antoni Gaudi's unfinished masterpiece. Lunch is independent. Afternoon visit to the Tápies Foundation, created by the Catalan painter Antoni Tápies for the purpose of promoting the study and knowledge of contemporary art. A visit to a private home with a stunning art collection precedes an evening at leisure.
Thursday, August 24th:
Spend the morning at the Miró Foundation, created by Miró himself, where his work co-exists with cutting-edge contemporary art. Following a group lunch, visit the Mies Foundation, best known for the now iconic Barcelona Pavilion designed by Mies van der Rohe for the 1929 International Exposition. In late afternoon, stroll the winding, cobbled streets of the El Born district, a picturesque part of the city filled with art galleries, boutique shops and eateries. Evening at leisure.
Friday, August 25th:
Check out of hotel and transfer to airport for the short flight to Bilbao. Enjoy a group lunch before visiting the Guggenheim Museum. This 1997 architectural landmark designed by Frank Gehry provides a seductive backdrop for the modern and contemporary art housed within. Check-in to hotel and evening at leisure.
Saturday, August 26th:
A daylong excursion to San Sebastian, including a group lunch, begins with a visit to the Chillida Foundation, dedicated to the memory of Spanish sculptor Eduardo Chillida. The museum showcases many of the sculptor's monumental works in a sculpture park. Later, we'll see more Chillida sculptures, together with work by Jorge Oteia and others, during a walking tour through the city's Open Air Contemporary Museum. Another stop will be at the Kursaal Center for Performing Arts, designed by Rafael Moneo. The day concludes with a stroll along the promenade, stopping in at select galleries, including one thatfeatures contemporary Basque artists. Late afternoon return to Bilbao and evening at leisure.
Sunday, August 27th:
Enjoy a private tour at the Museum of Fine Arts Bilbao this morning. Independent lunch. In the afternoon, an architecture and sculpture walk in the Arts District highlights the Rekalde Art Center and features studio and gallery visits. Farewell dinner at one of the Basque Country's best restaurants.
