ON wisconsin: Folk art | fine art | FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT
Racine, Milwaukee & Madison
September 20th - 24th, 2018
Join us on this early fall jaunt to explore the state’s art and architectural wonders—past and present.
Thursday, September 20th:
After an early morning flight from LAX, arrive midday at Chicago O’Hare Airport. Board coach and begin the short journey to Wisconsin, stopping for lunch en route at the iconic Brat Stop in Kenosha.
Arrive mid-afternoon for a private tour at the Racine Art Museum, which holds the largest and most significant contemporary craft collection in North America. Continue to Milwaukee and check-in at the Westin, a new hotel situated downtown with views of Lake Michigan. Enjoy a welcome dinner at Sanford Restaurant, an acclaimed eatery considered one of the best in the Midwest.
Friday, September 21st:
Breakfast at the hotel. Enjoy a private tour of the Milwaukee Art Museum followed by lunch at the museum’s Café Calatrava and time on your own. The museum’s primary strengths are 19th- and 20th-century American and European works, contemporary art, American decorative arts, American and European folk art, and an outstanding Haitian art collection. The Milwaukee Art Museum is an architectural landmark, comprised of three buildings designed by three legendary architects: Eero Saarinen, David Kahler, and Santiago Calatrava.
Take an architectural walking tour of the Historic Third Ward district. In a 10-square- block area, nearly 70 buildings—dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries—are on the National Register for Historic Places. Enjoy an exclusive art visit in late afternoon. Dinner and evening free.
Saturday, September 22nd:
Breakfast at hotel and check out. Depart hotel for short drive to the Lynden Sculpture Garden, a 30-acre sculpture park with a collection of more than 50 monumental sculptures. Continue by coach to Sheboygan to tour the Kohler Arts Center, a small, off-the- beaten-path museum an hour north of Milwaukee that has built a reputation in the art world for collecting and exhibiting outsider art and preserving large-scale installations or architectural environments.
We’ll have lunch in the Center’s ArtCafe. Proceed by coach to Madison and check-in at the Edgewater Hotel. Dine at The Statehouse, the hotel’s lake view restaurant offering seasonal American fare.
Sunday, September 23rd: Breakfast at hotel.
Depart early by coach for Spring Green to tour Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin. Taliesin East emerges from behind a hillside in the Wyoming Valley as a breathtaking work of wood and stone by Wright. Described as one of the greatest landscapes in America, the 600-acre estate was Wright’s home and studio and it was here, among his beautiful objets d’art, which include Asian prints, Native American artifacts, Mission-style furniture and pottery, that Wright found his inspiration.
Depart Spring Green with box lunches on board and travel back to Madison for guided visits to the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art and the Chazen Museum of Art. Renew and refresh at hotel before gathering early evening for short walk to Centro, a farm-to- fork Italian restaurant with housemade pastas for the Farewell Dinner.
Monday, September 24th:
Breakfast at hotel and check out. Board coach and travel to Racine for guided tour of Frank
Lloyd Wright’s iconic Johnson Wax Administration Building and nearby Wingspread, the Wright-designed house built for the then president of S.C. Johnson in 1938-39.
Enjoy a casual lunch in town before boarding the coach for transfer to Chicago O’Hare to board late afternoon/early evening flights back to LAX.
