The Digital Revolution: An Intro to Art on the BLockchain

Refik Anadol, Unsupervised, 2022, MoMA

Join art historian and curator Gladys Garrote for a virtual talk that aims to explore the intersection of digital art and blockchain technology. Together we will delve into the foundations of digital art linked with blockchain, elucidating how this technology has created a parallel art market, offering artists new avenues for creation, ownership, and monetization. The impact on peripheral communities and minority-representing artists is particularly noteworthy, as blockchain-based art has provided them with unprecedented opportunities to showcase their work, gain recognition, and connect directly with global audiences, often sidestepping traditional gatekeepers. Moreover, we will explore digital native art forms, including generative art, on-chain art, AI-driven creations, 3D renderings, and more. And we will delve into the fundamentals of art collecting in the digital realm, examining how NFTs (non-fungible tokens) are reshaping the very concept of ownership and patronage within the art world.

Gladys herself was a pioneer in the NFT movement in Havana, Cuba, from 2020 to 2023, facilitating the involvement of over 100 artists and contributing to a new economic model for the arts on the Island.

This event will begin at 5:30 pm Pacific / 8:30 pm Eastern
